Essential Oils and Your Family

essential oils and your family

As the busiest time of the year comes to a close and I look forward to a brand-new year, I think of all the new possibilities it brings. Of course, I’m of the belief that a new beginning is possible anytime no matter the date, but the thought of a brand-new year does help motivate one to be extra vigilant and mindful of their goals.

One of my goals for the new year is to create a more simplistic atmosphere for my family, so we can focus on what’s really important. Let’s be honest. It’s 2018 and there is chaos everywhere you look. From nearly every different form of media vying for your attention at all hours of the day to balancing the kid’s activities and still having enough mental power to get a nutritious, healthy dinner on the table—I think we could all use a little “zen” in our lives!

One of the simplest ways to create a soothing atmosphere that allows the mind to relax and unwind is by using essential oils in a water diffuser. Through the power of aromatherapy, you can infuse the air with calming fragrance in just a few simple steps!

Water diffusers can appear to be complicated at first glance, but they are extremely easy to operate. All you need is a bit of water and your favorite oils. The best part about a water diffuser is that it’s basically like a small cool-mist humidifier, which increases the humidity level in your home. My home gets very dry in the winter because of my gas heat, and low humidity makes the air in your home feel cooler than it actually is. This means we’re constantly turning up the thermostat, and our monthly utility bill can end up being more expensive. Dry air can also cause sore throat, dry skin, and dryness of the nasal passages which can actually increase your susceptibility to the common cold and other respiratory illnesses! Ideal humidity levels are usually between 40-50%. I like to run the diffuser overnight with a few drops of lavender to promote a calming atmosphere that lets my children know it’s time to start winding down before bedtime.

My favorite “calming” blend of oils is lavender and eucalyptus. I use about 2 drops of lavender and 1 drop of eucalyptus. It’s hard to believe such a small amount will fragrance an entire room, but the oils I use are 100% pure and undiluted (meaning that they do not contain any essential oils beside the pure lavender) and they pack quite a powerful punch! Sometimes I even add a drop or two of geranium oil for a touch of sweetness. All three of these are wonderful to diffuse separately, but they also come together in perfect harmony, which is exactly the type of feeling I’m wanting to promote in my home.

If you’d like a slightly more virbrant scent, try using one of the citrus oils like orange, or lemon. I also enjoy having the citrus oils pumping in the kitchen all day to keep that “just cleaned” scent lingering in the air. It’s especially helpful to diffuse these oils after cooking to help eliminate food odors.

For a fresh environment, I use diffuse peppermint. This invigorating oil is so powerful- with green and cooling qualities, it sets the tone for active days chasing my toddler.

As if the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils alone are not enough, using the water diffuser lets me control the air quality and fragrance in my home. I can not only customize the amount of fragrance by adjusting how many drops of oil I use, but also the timing and how long the diffuser runs for. I don’t have to worry about forgetting a lit candle or warmer; I can literally set it and forget it! These days, I’m all about low-maintenance technology – really anything that minimizes distraction as I try to chase my one year old. My water diffuser is my best friend for that reason- it’s always available, helps simplify my hectic life, and is safe for my family.

Have you used a water diffuser before? I’d love to hear your thoughts on essential oils and water diffusers. Leave a comment so we can trade essential oil blends and get the most out of our essentials!
